The iPhone has a real GPS receiver. Assisted-GPS, or a-GPS is just what it says it is. The cell tower location data is used to assist the GPS receiver when it does not have a good position fix from the GPS satellites. For example, if you are in a building and cannot get a GPS position fix, the phone will use triangulation from the cell tower data to come up with a position.
